With so many chateaus and castles spread across Europe, it’s easier than you may think to book one for a night. The AirBnB website even allows you to filter for castles when searching for accommodations. I learned about that nifty filter in the spring of 2019 while planning our Belgium trip. Suddenly I had a goal: let baby E sleep in a castle before she turned twenty-seven weeks old. Soon we were staying in a Belgian castle.

Sarah and I typically travel as a couple, but shortly before baby E was born, my mom suggested that they could accompany us on one of our trips. They could help with childcare, and we’d have an opportunity to create some family memories. The result was a family trip to Grand Cayman with the grandparents this November.

You see a friend’s travel photos pop up on social media and start to feel jealous. It happens. Don’t be fooled though, nothing is quite as easy as it looks in those curated snapshots. A lot of folks like to make travel seem relaxing, but real travel is gritty. Still, that shouldn’t keep you from doing something like flying to Europe with your baby.

For E’s first transatlantic adventure, we took a family trip to Belgium and Luxembourg. These little countries generally don’t get a lot of attention from American tourists. However, despite their small size, they pack a significant punch. I described the process that led us to choose Belgium and Luxembourg in a previous post. In this post, I’ll provide an overview of our adventure.

While Sarah and I travel quite a bit, most of our trips last a week or less. We can usually only manage one (slightly) longer trip each year. We’ve always tried to fit in a proper adventure during that longer trip, be it a safari in Namibia, a volcano trek in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a pig roast in Micronesia or a wedding in Croatia. Of course, this year we have a new travel buddy… and the kid complicates things.

At 1,220 feet (372 meters), Mt. Christoffel is the highest point on the island nation of Curaçao. Although the island is better known for its UNESCO-listed capital and excellent beaches, climbing Mt. Christoffel is one of the top activities for adventurous visitors. As our blog’s name implies, we’re all about packing the kid along for our adventures, but as I researched this climb, I found little to no information about climbing Mount Christoffel with a baby. Well, we (and by that I mostly mean my amazing wife) did it!

My wife and I celebrated our baby’s two month birthday by flying Southwest from Nashville to San Juan, Puerto Rico. We heard from other parents that babies are really easy to travel with when they are young. We also knew that we could fly her as a lap infant for free. Still, we were not sure what to expect when flying with a baby.
